Thoughts for the Week

So its been a while since my last post, so I thought I'd just give some thoughts and issues for the week. Ethan Moreau went down with a serious injury to his right eye last night, TSN is reporting that his career is in jeopardy. Lets all just keep our hopes up as no one ever likes to see this happen.

1) Don Cherry recently commented that Alex Ovechkins goal celebrations and antics are a little over the top. Cherry went on to say "Now watch Ovechkin. ... Does he not remind you of a soccer player?" and "I am predicting somebody's going to get him. And somebody's going to get him good. There's somebody out there -- some big defenceman is going to be sitting in the weeds. As he cuts across centre ice, somebody's going to cut him in half." Now, fact is, Crosby is a whiner, we have all come to know this very well, but what about Ovie, sometimes I agree, he is a little over the top, such as going crazy after scoring the 5th goal in a 5-1 killing. At some point it is unsportsmanlike. Cherry might have gone a little over the top himself, but he has a point in the fact that i
f Ovechkin doesnt watch out, someone is gonna "cut him in half".

2) Martin Brodeur comes back off an almost season ending injury, and in his first 3 games back he has let in only 2 goals, and posted two shutouts. Man, if he hasnt given Steve Yzerman any bigger a sign that HE IS THE MAN for team Canada's starting goalie. This guy is just downright amazing. 100 shutouts. 546 Career Wins. The list goes on.

3) Steve Mason WILL recieve the Calder Trophy this year. Its going to happen. Just imagine, if you will, if this kid had played the whole season, and hadnt gotten "Mono". He would undoubtedly be the league leader in just about every stat (maybe not wins but thats the team in front of him), and the Blue Jackets would be alot higher in the standings. He puts Carey Price in his place, and takes away that "Canada's goalie of the future" title.

4) Trade Talk. Trade Rumors. Leaked reports. Anonymous sources. These are probably alot of the terms you have been hearing over the last few weeks as the Trade Deadline has come closer and closer. Oh and the names that come up....Lecavalier......Kovalev.....Gaborik.....Bouwmeester....I think I even heard one rumor of Chris Pronger being traded back to Edmonton. Now come on. Lets be serious here for a second. Every rumor is complete BullShit, until/unless it comes from a)the general manager or b) the player themself. So read all the rumor sites, blogs, and even TSN's "rumor mill" for that matter. Its all just "hogwash" and people trying to come up with quality stories until something REAL happens.
Alexander Ovechkin to Edmonton (e5)

5) The Dallas Stars really know how to pick 'um. From Sean Avery at the beginning of the season, to Steve Ott's match penalty last night (the NHL is currently holding a hearing to decide what to do with the piece of shit). I dont even feel any bit sorry for the Stars. They shot themselves in the foot with Avery (c'mon everyone knows he's a headcase). If they make the playoffs, it shouuld not be seen as any sort of accomplishment, rather, a consequence of their crappy descision making, as they should have been in the top 3-4 of the West. (and Marty Turco's horrible first half)

6) Im going to say something absolutley insane in my next sentence. Something that will cause a massive uproar, if not possibly get me arrested (who knows right?!). The Pittsburgh Penguins should trade Sidney Crosby. Okay okay i know your thinking I am lost in some other universe, but lets think about this. Evgeni Malkin has completely taken over that team. It is no longer "Sids team", and imagine what they would get in return?! Even if they trade him they still have Malkin, Staal, Gonchar, Letang, Fleury. They dont have a very deep farm system, so this would help, and would probably garner some decent roster players. They would have to play it really smart though, making sure to trade him far away where he can never come back to haunt them. This is all just me thinking (rather insanely), and it will NEVER happen, but just puttin it out there as maybe a somewhat good idea....

8) The Oilers have not made a move yet, and arent expected to make any substantial ones either. Sitting in the 7th spot right now, it doesnt bother me, but winning 2 out of their last 6 does. Dwayne Roloson has played like Superman so far, but scoring has been a major issue. Aquiring a scorer would be a huge peice to the puzzle, but as of right now it seems like minor moves are the only thing Tambellini is set to do. Maybe this is better for the teams chemistry, and maybe a new start next season will prove alot better for the younger players. However, Ales Hemsky continues to show that if there was a complete, high skilled scorer on his line, that that would provide a top tier 1st line.

Anyways, those are my thoughts for the week, have a good one.
