On to my NHL thoughts for the week..
1 a – Daily Oiler Bashing – Well, it's the same old Oilers: impressive win on the road against San Jose, embarrassing lose at home to Florida, impressive win against division rival Vancouver. When will the real Oilers show their face, or is this what the real Oilers are?
1 b – I think the Oilers moved one step closer to a #1 goalie. Roli stood on his head in SJ, Garon took the lose to Florida, then Roli picks up another win against the Canucks. As much as we all want Roli to be traded for some immediate help, is Garon (at this time) really the man we want between the pipes to make a deep playoff run? I don't think so...
1 c – Sporer, Hemsky is a good player, but not great and definitely not a 'superstar'. Not yet anyways. Even if he hits 85+ points this year, one season does not define someone as a superstar (Cheechoo as proof). I have no problem in saying Hemsky has all the tools to make a great player, but he needs to put them to good use on a consistent basis in order to be recognized as one.
1 d – The rest of December features the Oilers playing only one team under .500, the Sens (still an explosive team). The majority of their games are at home, but they need to start beating teams ahead of them in the standings on a consistent basis if they wish to be considered a contender rather then a pretender.
2 – Let's get it out of the way, Avery will not be back with Dallas. With Dallas being my team, I'm still unbiased as to the decision. Either way, Dallas has more problems on the ice (Turco, common buddy) then just Avery.
2 b – Despite Hull being the driving force to sign Avery, it definitely should NOT cost him his job. Les Jackson still has to give his OK, and Hicks is the one signing the contracts and cheques and ultimately has the final say. Regardless, if every GM that made a bad signing and was fired for it, the NHL would be in desperate need of some GMs immediately.
3 a – The LA Kings are going to have a ridiculous defensive core in the very near future: Doughty leads all rookies in ice-time, Thomas Hickey is a virtual lock for the World Jr team and Jack Johnson (when healthy) is an absolute stud. Throw in Kyle Quincy (23 years old) and the Kings will be a force to be taken seriously for the next decade.
3 b – Also with with Kings, they are in the top 10 in both PP (10th) and PK (9th) categories. Who would'a thunk it...
4 – You wanna know a stat that separates the elite from everyone else? Detroit (5-5), Pittsburgh (7-7) and San Jose (3-3) are all .500 when TRAILING after 2 periods! Talk about determination. It's games like those that really test the team's skill and character. In comparison, the next closest team is the Colorado (4-8-1) at .308. Edmonton (1-10) is .091 at 24th.
5 a – The NYI are actually the best in the NHL at something! And it's truly a positive stat! They lead the NHL with 525 blocked shots! It's too bad they lost Dipietro for such a long time, Weight and Guerin are having bounce back years and I really feel like they would be right in the middle of the playoff hunt had Rick been healthy.
5 b – I still think Dipietro's deal is a steal. 4.5 million bucks for a top 10 goalie, over 15 years?! The deal goes until he is 39, which is a deep age to be paying 4.5 million too; however, signing a goalie for that amount for his entire prime year is a steal. I agree he hasn't put up the numbers to set him into the elite goalie category, but he has plenty of time left to establish himself... And let's be honest, he plays on Long Island; if he were anywhere else, I think he might have a cup already.
Here are my non-NHL thoughts of the week...
1 a – Colts for life. They became the 1st team in NFL history to have 5 consecutive years with a 7-game win streak, that ridiculous. In comparison, the Detroit Lions have only had 3 7-game winning streaks in the last 75 years!!! New England, NYJ and Miami all won again and all moved to 9-5; however, the NYJ hold all tie-breakers and Miami is next in line, which means, New England could miss the playoffs with a 10-win season. How does that sound Sporer? Sounds like music to my ears. Fuckpalface.
1 b – The Colts have only allowed 5 touchdowns through the air this season. That's a scary good defense to go with an already scary good offense. If they get the #5 seed, they will travel to Mile High and play the Broncos who are the only playoff team to allow more points then they score. Easy pickin's.
1 c – Staying with the NFL, Tennessee and the NYG have gone from the most dominant teams this season, to the most vulnerable. They have both gone 2-2 in their last 4 games and have been replaced as favorites by Pittsburgh and Carolina.
1 d – Again with the NFL, remember when we all thought that 3 out of the 4 teams from the NFC East (Washington, NYG, Dallas, Philadelphia) would make the playoffs? NYG are 11-3 and are a lock, but 9-5 Dallas, 7-5-1 Philadelphia and 7-7 Washington are all on the outside looking in. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
2 a – Duke (8-1) is ranked #7 in the AP polls, while Notre Dame (7-2) can be found at #12. How does the humiliation feel, Drew?
2 b – Also in college sports, seriously, does the BCS committee hate everyone? Why don't they have a playoff format? The bowl championship series is just like my co-blogger Sporer... flaming. How can Notre Dame (6-6) get into a bowl game?! How can their honestly be 34 bowl games?! That's 68 out of 119 eligible teams qualifying for bowls. How ridiculous is that? They should really just give the BCS trophy to USC, it's like death and taxes... inevitable.
3 – The evil empire has struck again. The Yankees landed the two biggest starting pitching names of this year's free agent class: C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. The Yanks are also in the hunt for Ben Sheets. Could you imagine those three plus Chien-Ming Wang, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes, like one writer stated, 'that would be a pretty powerful statement'. It also appears like they are track to add 1B Mark Teixeira to replace steroid monkey, Jason Giambi. Looks like another lost year for the Blue Jays and the rest of the AL.
4 a – I'm in Fort Mac, and I'm craving some tacos and what do I find out??? THE TACO TIME IS F*CKING CLOSED! I hope the mayor of this God-forsaken city finds a big turd in his septic tank the next time he flushes his toilet.
4 b – I had to settle for Kokanee and a Kit-Kat, not a bad substitute.
5 a – We have a new weekly blogger. Lets assume he can keep up with the awesomeness that is 'Smith & Sporer' with his 'Potato Sack' column or I just might have to 'Crotch Sack' him.
5 b - In honor of our new blogger, and his wanting of more hot girls in hot pictures, I created a montage of current athlete's girlfriends. Enjoy responsibly.

Cheers.
-Smith
p.s. clockwise from the top left is Adriana Lima (Marko Jaric), Kim Kardashian (Reggie Bush), Jessica Simpson (Tony Romo) and Gisele Bundchen (Tom Brady).
not a Dipietro fan at all not sure why just hate him, and dont respect him, i think its the whole being from america thing, YUCK, lol,
ReplyDeleteand i agree man LA is not far from being a great team, goaltending and some veteren leadership and they are right there in the mix for a cup
good post man,
PS i hate college basketball, it ranks up there with volleyball, and field hockey, on sports i dont follow, but it looks like the irish are doing better in B-ball, they should recruit some of those guys for the football team, cant get that much worse lol
Ok, sorry I'm late for a response. I was busy studying. But now to more important things.
ReplyDelete1) The Oil at home: Blow. Suck. No good.... The good news, however, is that I will be watching them from 3rd row this evening (suckers!) so I will let you know what they look like. Who know, maybe one of them will make the potato Sack this week.
2)Rick DiPietro. I have to admit, I actually somewhat agree with you. When you consider that he'll only be getting 4.5 million per year, that is a steal of a deal, and I think he's good enough. The problems with this is what he's actually going through right now....injuries. The isle better pray this doesn't become chronic because then this gamble blows up in their face. But let's face it, Charles Wang isn't really crying for money.
3) Drew, why don't you just bow to the mighty Trojans. They are champions. Pete Carrol... a king!
4)Mark Teixara. I thought Boston was going after this guy? Damn pin stripes, they should just start their own league with all the players they buy.
5)Girls. Good thing this is a guys sight or you know where my balls would be for you making that comment about those pictures. Ass.
Ya Pete Carrol did really well in the NFL right??? Did Charlie Weiss do well i dont remember? haha king hahahahaha
ReplyDelete?Just would also like to comment on the oilers coaching staff, instead of maybe solving the goal tending problem the oilers decide to prolong it further by starting Garon, i mean come on the Roli has played really well his last few games, but its impossible to get into any rhythm when your playing every other game. POOR COACHING IS PLAGUING THE OILERS!!!!!!
Ok yes starting Garon was a huuuuuge mistake, Mac T's reasoning being that he wanted Roloson to start against Vanouver in the double header, though Mac T was meaning well, it was a poor choice, and damn did we suffer for it. To blame Mac T enntirely, isnt at all right, the players still play the game. The Oilers could have had a 3-1 lead by the end of the first had they burried their chances. Right now, the Oilers have a major problem with consistency, and finish. They are horribly inconsistant, as they come up with a big win against the NUcks, and then blow hard chunks against the Hawks. Also, watching Erik Cole play right now makes me want to vomit, yes he is fighting the puck, and he litterally really is, and oh my good lord is it ever one of the hardest things to watch. Once again the Oilers were trying to do to much tonight. Stupid passes, not getting the puck deep, not driving the net, turnovers in the neuatral zone. The top line didnt play half bad as each time they were on the ice they were creating chances. The problem with the Oilers right now is their supporting cast. Horcoff Hemsky, Souray, Visnovsky, Gilbert, and Grebs all continue to play well (Penner has been much better as of late), and ill include Cogliano as he puts in a solid effort each night. Its the rest of the players that worry me, Cole sucks, Stortini is no good and good for nothing, Pouliot may have found his game, but really, what can Pouliot bring? Reddox? this guy is a joke, i cant believe he stays up and schremp gets sent back down, f(*& me. Gagner is still struggling, as is Nilsson. Moreau has never been a big offensive help, and Brodziak is letting down this year as well. The Kid Line needs to click if the Oilers are too be effective enough to hold a quality playoff spot. The three goalie monster needs to be ended immediately! At this point keep Roloson, deal GAron for a bag of pucks, and hope roli stays hot. (p.s Drew, the Flames have poor coaching, thats why they are still batlling for a playoff spot most of the time, making early playoff exits, even though they are "spoiled with riches") Mac T isnt a bad coach, he made a poor descision, but he meant to make good.
ReplyDeletebad coaches make poor choices.......
ReplyDeleteand at least the flames make the playoffs, even with an early exit,
also u should know kyle, i dont hate the oilers, i am a fan, bigger flames fan, but none the less an oilers fan i just find it easier to point out the flaws of the oilers, i could do it to calgary just as easily, but theres no audience for that here in edmonton,
I agree Iron mike isnt the greatest coach in the world but at least he aint MACT AHAHAHAHAHA
I'm just wondering why the discussion is about the Oilers, when there are beautiful women to look at. You know, the world doesn't revolve around Sporer's love for the Oilers, I think we should discuss the Colts or the Stars or the Trojans. Or Drew, how about those Flames? Barry, how are those Leafs doing? 9-2 Sporer. 9-2. 'Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteYou boners know nothing.
ReplyDeleteMacT is not to blame for last night. It was a smart decision to play Garon. I don't think Roli is good enough to play 3 games in 4 nights, so you go with the smart play and put Garon in net. I repeat, smart play. Last night was not Garon's fault. Did you see the first 4 goals?? With the possible exception of the 4th, Garon had no chance. You don't leave the reigning rookie of the year WIDE OPEN in the slot and expect your goalie to save it. The kid put it between the top 2 bars (you know the back bar). That's ridiculous! Anyways, Garon maybe should have had the 4th one and the 5th one was brutal, but I would have given up by then too. The team in front of him was HORRIBLE. Can we talk about how bad our penalty kill is??
I have to admit, I am getting closer to the fence line regarding MacT. I love the guy as a person, but our boys just aren't where they should be for the talent they have available. And I know that Gagner was never expected to be as good as Kane, but man, if you watch the two, they just are two completely different players. Kane can dominate the ice. And it's not like he's any bigger. Could this be coaching or is it just a natural talent thing. Hmmm.
Steve, by the way, DAllas blows too. And look who their GM is. Brett Hull. Sell Out. Go cheer for the States at the World Juniors this year. Bluff.
Coaching is about finding a niche Drew. Charlie Weiss had a relatively good NFL career, but look at his college team. Brutal. They made it to a bowl cuz there's too many of 'em. It's a toilet bowl. Weiss should go back to the pros.
Pete Carrol on the other hand, horrible NFL career, arguably the worst, but look at his team. He fits in just peachy coaching young guys in Southern California. Go Trojans.
Ok, I'm in disagreance of blaming MacT. Backstrom would play bak-to back games, Luongo woud play back-to-back, Kipper woud play back-to-back; if Edmonton wants to compete in this division, they need a goalie who is a legitimate #1 and neither Roli (his age) or Garon (his performance) are suitable. I think the problem just rest that, the Oilers dont have a capable 70-game #1 goalie. And there's only so much you can do with spare parts... What do you think?
ReplyDeleteWell duh they dont have a capable 70 game goalie, we knew that at the begining. I agree with brett, it was a smart decision to play Garon, and ya i guess many of the goals werent his fault. Yea yea it was a 9-2 loss, it happens, at least they are still above .500 after it, and they can go out tonight and beat the Cunucks and forget the Chicago game ever happened. Sometimes you get lit up and its just not your night, it happens, move on. It was a combination of just poor efforts, a few funny bounce and bad breaks, and not completely solid goaltending. The Oilers need to find their game, get rid of Erik Cole, and get going quick.
ReplyDeletep.s. Did Jessica Simpson get a breast reduction?! She looks a little smaller then normal! lol
