Welcome to the 1st edition of the 'Monday Morning Recap', where every Monday, I will give 5 NHL thoughts and 5 'non-NHL' thoughts. So, without further ado, lets proceed.
Here are my NHL thoughts for the week...
1 - I think Alexander Semin has some truth to his thoughts on Sid the Kid. If 2010 was this winter, I would much rather have Vinny Lecavalier (as evidence by his performance against the Maple Laughs) then #87.
2 - One major reason why the Isles sit last in the entire NHL, 5-on-5 play. They are dead last (by a large margin) in even strength goals with a minute 0.44 per game.
3 - Anyone who thought Marian Hossa would play second fiddle to Zetterberg and Datsyuk in Detroit, raise your hand. Ya, that's what i thought. Lucky for me, I took him in the 2nd round (1th overall) and hes 3rd in league scoring (I also have Malkin at #1 and Savard at #4)
4 a - Again with the 'League Leaders' category, Tim Thomas leads the league in Save % with Ryan Miller in 3rd. Miller leads in GAA, Thomas is 2nd. Is the Luongo, Brodeur, Lundqvist stranglehold on the Vezina nearing it's end? On a side note, Alex Auld is 4th in S% and 5th in GAA, uh oh Marty Gerber...
4 b - Miller and Thomas are both American and will be around for Vancouver '10. Uh oh Canada, Czech Republic, Russia, Finland, Sweden...
5 - My beloved Dallas Stars have possibly to two most irritating players on their roster in Sean Avery and Steve Ott. I love my Stars more then any other Edmontonian, but seriously, they are worse then when Vancouver had Matt Cooke and Jarkko Ruutu runnin' around like idiots.
Here are my non-NHL thoughts of the week...
1 - Diego Maradona is set to become the new coach of Argentina's National Team. An SI writer put best... 'from the Hand of God, to Oh my God!'
2 - USC has scored 301 points in their 7 wins and only given up 30 points defensively. How are they only ranked 7th in the BCS?
3 a - The Colts beat the Pats 18-15 on Sunday Night. How does it feel, Sporer?
3 b - The Sunday Night Football song by Faith Hill is just not as good as MNF's Hank Williams version. SNF should take a page from MNF and customize the opening theme with the teams competing that night.
4 - Sportsnet is celebrating their 10th anniversary. 10th anniversary of what? Smiling like a doughnut for TSN and plummeting to #3 (behind The Score) in a 3 sports-only channel market in Canada? Pitiful.
5 - Chelsea FC obliterated Sunderland 5-0. That result, coupled with Liverpool's humiliating 2-1 defeat to last place Spurs have them back in 1st place, where they belong. Take that Homan.
Cheers.
-Smith
